Every child should have the same opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in our community and education system reaching their highest potential. A family’s future should not be determined by where they live. I believe in building equitable and quality systems that work to support and protect families.
What do you think are the top three issues affecting our children and families and how do you propose to address them?
The top three issues affecting our children in Santa Clara County are 1) closing the education achievement gap and access to early learning opportunities, 2) affordable housing and 3) economic opportunity.
How will the priorities you addressed in the first question be reflected in the way that you approach the budget process?
In the school board budget process, I will apply an equity lens to prioritize maximum resources that support teaching and learning; expand on programs that support children at risk academically; advocate for programs that engage families that face barriers navigating the education system; and, address workforce retention issues and recruitment of diverse and qualified educators.
What steps will you take to address the high cost and lack of availability of quality child care and preschool programs in our communities, especially for low-income children and English language learners?
I will build relationships, collaborate and expand on programs that support child care and preschool programs for low-income children and English learners in our community. As an English learner in Kindergarten and now a mother of two children in a home child care center, I understand that importance of universal preschool and access to children care. Children deserve a healthy, early and strong start in education. Families need support navigating the education system and supporting the transition into school.
What steps will you take to improve inclusion and outcomes for children with special needs or with disabilities?
I will work to improve accountability in serving children with special needs. I will ensure that programs for children with special needs are accessible and serving their best interest. Just as importantly, I will ensure that families have the resources they need navigating the system and that the education system is equipped to serving the families.
Much of the student achievement gap has been linked to the "opportunity gap" that low-income children and children of color experience, including lack of access to healthy food, preschool, tutors and enrichment activities. If elected, what steps will you take to address this issue?
I will work towards improving the lived experiences of children of color. I will ensure that families have the support to access programs that meet their basic needs, and that programs are designed to address barriers families face. I plan to support programs that address the opportunity gap to improve outcomes of children.
