Morgan Hill has one of the highest percentages of young families of any city in Silicon Valley. I led the effort to build facilities that provide recreational, educational, artistic and social services resources for children and families, and will work to enhance those opportunities as Mayor.
What do you think are the top three issues affecting our children and families and how do you propose to address them?
As Mayor my top priority will be safety, particularly of our children. I will push for more School Resource Officers in our schools to ensure our schools are safe. In addition, we need to provide recreation opportunities for children and families. I led the effort to build our recreation center, aquatics center, outdoor sports complex and other recreation facilities, and will lead the effort to build a Magical Bridge play complex and other facilities in our community. Finally, we need to work more closely with our schools to enhance education opportunities, I have the strongest education ties of any candidate.
How will the priorities you addressed in the first question be reflected in the way that you approach the budget process?
We need a long-term commitment to both public safety and recreation. I will work to identify pension resources to ensure our SROs will not face cutbacks in future years, and will identify long-term funding resources for our recreation facilities.
What steps will you take to address the high cost and lack of availability of quality child care and preschool programs in our communities, especially for low-income children and English language learners?
We should expand child care and preschool programs at our recreation center and other public facilities.
What steps will you take to improve inclusion and outcomes for children with special needs or with disabilities?
As a parent of a special needs child I understand the unique challenges faced by these children. I am a strong supporter of the proposed Magical Bridge, a unique playground facility designed specifically to meet the needs of special needs and disabled people of all ages.
Much of the student achievement gap has been linked to the "opportunity gap" that low-income children and children of color experience, including lack of access to healthy food, preschool, tutors and enrichment activities. If elected, what steps will you take to address this issue?
The youth center we built as part of our recreation center provides a perfect place to provide tutors and enrichment activities, I will work to expand these. We have facilities adjacent to our lowest income elementary schools, I will continue my work to expand preschool, access to healthy meals, and other resources critical to student success.
